Physicists at Fermilab in Illinois believe they have observed an unusual, heavy subatomic particle, which they hope is a new elementary particle or force of nature. But their results may be merely a statistical aberration. If the Fermilab results are real, they could provide the first significant change in what is known as the standard model of physics in more than five decades, and researchers are holding their breaths in anticipation.
