Neurologists issue guidelines for concussions

Athletes with head injuries should be removed from play until cleared by a specialist, and youth sports practices and games need to be monitored by a certified athletic trainer, the group says.In a bid to set a new standard for amateur sports leagues' treatment of brain injury, the American Academy of Neurology recommended Monday that any athlete suspected of suffering a concussion be removed from play immediately and be seen by a physician specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of brain trauma. Athletes should not return to play, the group added, until they have been cleared by a specialist.
