Researchers have developed a method to find mutations in a class of cancer genes that, when removed, promote cancer. The research goes some way to addressing the challenge of discerning the causative, "driver" mutations from the "passenger" mutations. The team were able to construct signatures associated with deletions in cancer causing tumor suppressor genes. The research also finds that at least one in nine genes can be removed without killing cancer cells in test tubes.
