The cause of ALS, a fatal disease that paralyzes its victims, has long eluded scientists. But a new study for the first time has identified a common cause of all forms of ALS, opening a new field to find a treatment. The cause is a broken recycling system in the neurons in the spinal cord and brain that results in severely damaged cells. The finding also may have a wider role in other dementias such as Alzheimer's.
