Researchers from two major HIV prevention trials have announced favorable results of an approach called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which involves the use of drugs commonly used for treating HIV. One of these, the Partners PrEP study, provides the strongest evidence yet of PrEP's effectiveness. A full evaluation is needed to determine the best course for VOICE, an ongoing study of more than 5,000 women in sub-Saharan Africa testing both PrEP and the vaginal microbicide tenofovir gel.
