Why bat-pollinated flowers are oversexed

(PhysOrg.com) -- Flowers pollinated by bats have a reputation for producing copious amounts of pollen from oversized male reproductive organs, and until now most scientists believed this was to compensate for poor pollen distribution by the bats. Now Canadian researchers have suggested the reason is the opposite, and bats select for greater pollen production because they can efficiently transport large amounts of pollen on their fur.
