Cave system on Mars?

A scientist studying images of the Red Plant has found evidence of caves near the equator, in ancient lava flows from the Arsia Mons volcano. The caves could one day aid space explorers. Caves were some of the earliest refuges for human beings on Earth. Could the same be true for future pioneers on Mars?
