CDC documents sickle cell disease risks

Children with the disease are four times as likely to have health problems, a study finds. The results may indicate a new focus on the ailment, which affects 1 in 350 black children. African American children with sickle cell disease are at high risk of intellectual disabilities, hearing and vision deficits and frequent severe headaches, federal researchers said Tuesday.
