A new study shows that defibrillators -- devices designed to detect and correct dangerous heart rhythms -- can help heart disease patients live longer, and with a much better quality of life, than they do now. A simple change in the way doctors set the device led to an 80 to 90 percent reduction in inappropriate shocks, which are painful and can lead to anxiety/depression. It also helped patients live longer, reducing the risk of death by 55 percent.
