Bending mountains: Mystery may be solved

Earth's mountain ranges tend to form in fairly straight lines. But sometimes they make a sudden, dramatic curve. Although scientists have long understood that the push and pull of our planet's dynamic tectonic plates cause these bends, what goes on underneath the surface when mountain chains go catawampus has been a mystery — until now.
