Geologists are still piecing together the tectonic story behind the powerful Great Lisbon Earthquake, which shook Portugal, Spain and northern Morocco violently on Nov. 1, 1755. The temblor nearly destroyed Lisbon; what wasn't leveled by it was demolished in the ensuing tsunami and fires that raged for days. At least 40,000 people were killed.
