Opponents of bullfighting call it barbaric. Proponents defend it on grounds of tradition, and they suspect their rivals have an ulterior motive: to assert regional identity and separatism. Fans laid on a hero's welcome when Jose Tomas made a triumphal return to professional bullfighting in Barcelona three years ago, ending a much-lamented retirement.
