Pursuing energy independence will hardly mitigate climate change

Although cutting carbon dioxide emissions can lead to energy security benefits, such as reducing energy imports, pursuing energy independence will not equivalently reduce emissions, reports a new paper. An international research team concludes that emissions reductions targets are unlikely to be achieved by solely pursuing policies that make nations more energy-independent.
