The laboratory mouse has been widely used for research on a variety of diseases and genetic studies to understand which genes are involved in various illnesses. However, actual variations in past sequences of genes were unknown. Researchers have now sequenced a nearly complete map of mouse genetic variation. Cataloging the full set of variants is a first step in identifying the actual variants affecting disease.
