Leakage of private information from popular websites is common, new study finds

A study of more than 100 popular websites has found that three-quarters leak either private information or users' unique identifiers to third-party tracking sites. The study showed how such leakage could permit tracking sites to link bits of information to create detailed profiles of individuals. Efforts to date to curb such leakage and linkage of personal information, including proposals made in a 2010 Federal Trade Commission report, would be largely ineffective, the study concluded.
