Got influenza? Blood genomic signature provides clues to aetiology of respiratory infections

Scientists have shown that they can identify and characterise an individual's response to a respiratory viral infection by examining the pattern of gene expression in their blood. The research, published by Cell Press online on 6 August in the journal Cell Host and Microbe, is the first step toward a blood test that may someday be used to decide who would benefit from an antiviral versus antibiotic treatment and possibly even determine prognosis after viral infection or therapeutic intervention...
