Cucumber fruit spines--once thought to be mere surface features--hold the key to understanding how plants control their outer architecture. A new study has revealed that a gene called CsTs, which encodes a C-type lectin receptor-like kinase, plays a central role in shaping the firmness and structure of these spines. When this gene is disrupted, cucumber fruit grows soft and malformed spines due to changes in cell wall composition and cytoskeletal organization. By using CRISPR editing, microscopy, and gene expression analysis, researchers uncovered how CsTs integrates structural and biochemical cues to sculpt cucumber surfaces--offering a genetic entry point to modify plant texture and resistance traits.
