Hidden Heroes: Root Microbes Offer New Hope for Kiwifruit Disease Control
In the fight against a devastating kiwifruit disease, scientists have discovered that the plant's own microbiome may be its strongest ally. Disease-resistant cultivars like 'Wanjin' harbor unique microbial communities in their roots and leaves that help them withstand infection from Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), the culprit behind bacterial canker. Researchers identified several beneficial bacterial strains--especially Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Lysobacter--that actively suppressed disease symptoms. By isolating and testing these strains, the team revealed their remarkable potential as natural biocontrol agents. The findings shed light on how genotype-linked microbes enhance plant immunity and could open new paths for eco-friendly disease management in kiwifruit production.
