A couple of years ago, one of my former chemistry students, now a London-based model, had herself body-painted with fruits and vegetables to promote vegetarianism. She was following the footsteps of more famous personalities such as retired actress Brigitte Bardot and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney who have protested against seal hunts. Now we have George Clooney purposely getting arrested to draw attention to hungry Somalian civilians. It's not that celebrity causes are not worthwhile, but the vast majority of them, like their everyday career work, appeal to emotion and not to reason. read more
