Within the animal kingdom, the beetles are an incredibly diversified group, with an impressive amount of species. This is echoed in the supposed answer of British evolutionary biologist J.B.S. Haldane when asked by theologians what could be inferred about the ‘creator’ by looking at his works. Haldane allegedly replied: “an inordinate fondness of beetles”. Now, a new study, published in Nature Communications, suggests that the loss of flight might have promoted this diversity. read more
