Have there been more higher magnitude Earthquakes lately? Yes, there has been a slight increase in the number of higher magnitude Earthquakes. Is this unusual? Not at all! Why have they been happening so close to one another in time? Who knows?! The Earth doesn't give us its schedule for each century. And the science of modern seismology isn't all that old. Sure, there have been various devices created over the centuries that have been able to detect Earthquakes and even tell the observer from which direction the epicenter of an Earthquake is coming, such as the Zhang Heng's Seismoscope invented in the 2nd century AD pictured below. read more
