The road not taken: Do stress-specific mutations lead down different evolutionary paths?

Evolutionary divergences, the emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria or cancer in humans are all empowered by many types of mutational DNA change. Researchers show for the first time that conditions common in nature strongly influence the pattern of genetic variation and consequently the evolvability of traits dependent on particular mutations.
