Research may lead to new strategies against sepsis

Scientists are closer to solving a long-standing mystery in sepsis, a complex, often life-threatening condition. By blocking the activity of a protein in cells that line blood vessels in mice, they have halted a cascade of cellular events that culminates in out-of-control inflammation, and protected lungs from damage. The findings provide new insights into molecular details underlying sepsis and its effects on lungs, and may lead to new treatments.
