The widespread use of plastic containers creates significant waste disposal problems for the greenhouse industry and end consumers. New research focused on developing more green alternatives to the use of these petroleum-based products evaluated the physical properties of biocontainers for use in greenhouses. Seven commercial biocontainers were compared with plastic containers for physical attributes such as strength, water usage, and algal/fungal growth. Results related to container wet strength and water requirements proved most significant.
