The USS Hatteras, an iron-hulled steamship that was converted into a gunboat by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, was lost to the sea on Jan. 11, 1863, during one of the many battles for the strategic Confederate port of Galveston, Texas. During a two-day mission this week, a team of archaeologists and technicians assembled by NOAA will be using sonar to create a 3-D map of the exposed remains of the ship.
