How Much Energy Do We Really Use?

It is said that Mankind uses about 15TW of energy continuously, with most of that coming from fossil fuels. However I think there is another just as valid way of looking at how much energy we use that gives a very different answer. This is relevant when people say in a discussion about reducing fossil fuel use “But what we really have is an energy problem” as if it is somehow a more profound assessment of our situation.
