Teens who feel responsible to their parents are more engaged in school

Researchers surveying 835 youths in suburban Chicago and Beijing have found that youths who feel more responsible to their parents stay engaged in school and perform better. The study was conducted over two years and began when the youths were in 7th grade. The findings suggest that parents need to communicate to teenagers the importance of acting responsibly as they enter middle school; middle school is often a time when students' school engagement declines.
