How barrier islands survive fury of storms

Hurricane Irene has prompted mandatory evacuations along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The low-lying barrier islands are particularly vulnerable to pounding by storms, but left to their own devices, these sandy outposts are surprisingly resilient, geologists say.
