New tsunami maps will show risks from likelier surges

Current maps are based on worst-case scenarios such as from events that might occur once in thousands of years. The new charts are predicated on events likely at least once every 500 years. They will aid coastal cities and port officials in planning.Within the next three years, the state of California plans to produce a new set of statewide tsunami maps that will help coastal communities, harbor masters and port officials prepare for the most likely threats.
