Chance of tsunami, 9.0 quake is small in Southland, easing nuclear plant risks, officials say

The operators of the San Onofre and Diablo Canyon plants say they are able to withstand quakes of magnitude 7. Seismologists say a Japan-size quake is not likely off Southern California because there is no subduction zone.Officials tried to reassure Californians on Monday that the kind of nuclear crisis facing Japan was highly unlikely at the state's two nuclear power plants.
