Death rate of California prisoners is down nearly 30% since early 2006

A court-appointed monitor says the drop indicates progress is being made in reducing the number of preventable healthcare-related deaths in the state's prison system. The death rate of California prisoners has dropped 29% since the beginning of 2006, when inmate healthcare was seized from state control, according to a report Monday by a court-appointed overseer.
